For new drivers, driving on the highway can be scary, but with the right knowledge and planning, it can be a safe and fun experience. Here are some things you should know before you hit the road:

Speed:

The speed limit on most highways is between 55 and 75 mph. Be sure to check the posted speed limit and obey it at all times. It’s also important to be aware of the flow of traffic, as many drivers may be going above the posted speed limit.

Lane changes:

When changing lanes on the highway, it’s important to use your turn signal to indicate your intentions to other drivers. Always check your mirrors and blind spots before changing lanes, and make sure there is enough room for you to safely merge into the new lane.

Passing:

If you come across a slower-moving vehicle on the highway, you may need to pass them. Before doing so, check to make sure it is safe to do so and use your turn signal to indicate your intentions. Once you have passed the other vehicle, be sure to merge back into your lane safely.

Merging:

When entering the highway, you’ll need to merge with the flow of traffic. Make sure to use your turn signal and increase your speed to match the flow of traffic before merging.

Exit ramps:

When approaching an exit ramp, make sure to check the posted signs to ensure you are taking the correct exit. Use your turn signal well in advance to indicate your intentions to exit the highway.

Weather conditions:

Be aware of the current weather conditions and adjust your driving accordingly. If it’s raining, snowing, or there is low visibility, slow down and maintain a safe distance from the vehicle in front of you.

Distracted driving:

Avoid all forms of distracted driving, such as using your phone, eating, or applying makeup while behind the wheel. Keep your focus on the road at all times to ensure the safety of yourself and other drivers.

Emergency vehicles:

Always pull over to the side of the road and stop when an emergency vehicle is approaching with its lights and sirens on.
